The Waiting Room (Lost Futures)
What to Expect
The Waiting Room looks at how time can seem to pause, how plans for the future can be delayed, and how ordinary places continue on as they are shaped by changes in society and the economy.
This project shows that unease does not come from the objects themselves. Instead, it comes from a bigger feeling that things continue but do not really move forward, making everyday spaces feel stuck both mentally and culturally.
This project explores a broader social condition marked by uncertainty and stalled futures. Rather than appearing as a sudden break, this feeling manifests as ongoing stagnation in everyday places that still function but no longer show signs of progress. Both highlight how people feel stuck with few alternatives and a sense of time standing still. Today’s culture makes this worse by repeating and reusing familiar things instead of creating new ones.
❋Encourages new ways of seeing familiar placesThe project invites people to look more closely at their everyday surroundings, helping them notice detail, atmosphere and change that might otherwise go unnoticed.
❋Reflects local experiences and environmentsThe work connects directly to places within Wakefield, offering a thoughtful and relatable exploration of how social and economic changes shape everyday life.
